You’ve probably heard of terms like routers and switches and hubs and converters enough times to make you want to know techno babble. But what exactly is a router? A router is a hardware device which can split your internet connection (cable or DSL) between numerous machines. So rather than paying for two connections or additional IP’s, you can save money by paying for one connection and splitting that between all of your computers. The router will pay for itself. We offer an eye opening $189.00 deal for routers. For only $189.00, we go to your house, install it, and you keep the router too! Call us at 949-6888 or sales@iav.com for further information.

Have you heard the term white box recently? More and more, government and large private corporations are moving away from name brand computers and starting to use something affectionately known in the industry as “white boxes”. If you have been at UH recently, you will know what I am talking about. Why are they doing this? One reason is that name brand computers are loaded with highly proprietary parts. This makes upgrading not only hard to accomplish but also expensive. White boxes are generally made with industry standard prices. This is why White boxes may not be cheaper to purchase but certainly will be cheaper to upgrade later on. If you would like further information on white boxes, please call us at 949-6888 or email us at sales@iav.com.

Ever watched techies surf the web and wonder why he/she never uses the mouse? That’s because they know all the keyboard shortcuts. Here’s how:

F6:
Hit it it when you’re too lazy to use your mouse to select the address bar. F6 will automatically highlight your address bar so you can just type the url of the site you want to go to without using your mouse.

Ctrl-Left Arrow & Ctrl-Right Arrow:
After you hit F6, you can use these two commands to jump from point to point in the address bar. Ctrl-Left Arrow takes you back, and Ctrl-Right Arrow takes you forward. This command is useful when you memorize URLs. For example, you’re at: http://www.smartcows.com/networking/index.php and you want to check out the managed firewall section. And being the genius with the photographic memory you are, you know that the url for the managed firewall section which is http://www.smartcows.com/networking/managedfirewall.html.
Now, you can use the command to jump from slash (/) to slash and dots (.) to dots. Once you reach the index.php part of the url, you can delete it and type managedfirewall.html instead.
Voila! You just changed the url without using the mouse…

SHIFT-Arrows:
Now, if you had just tried using the Ctrl-Arrow command, you may have had difficulty deleting the index.php part of the url. No worries. You can highlight text without using the mouse too. Just click down on the SHIFT key while you use your arrow keys to select chunks of text at a time. You’ll find this works in WORD and other MS programs as well. Very useful.
